Sanjeewa Anura de Mel who serves as a bodyguard of Parliamentarian Duminda Silva, was the suspect who was identified.

However, one of the two other witnesses present at the identification parade had failed to identify the suspect.

The third witness had told court that the appearance of the suspect was similar to the person who carried out the shooting.

The lawyer appearing on behalf of the suspect told court that since his client was serving as a body guard to MP Duminda Silva, it was his duty to act in that manner.

He went on to say that it would be unfair if investigations are not conducted to ascertain as to who
shot at MP Duminda Silva, who sustained serious injuries in the incident.

Meanwhile, lawyers have requested court to call for an expeditious report on the condition of those
injured in the Mulleriyawa shooting, who are currently receiving treatment.

The request was made from the Colombo Additional Magistrate Prasanna Alwis by the lawyer looking after the interests of the family of Bharatha Lakshaman.

The lawyer pointed out that the injured MP who is now receiving treatment is undoubtedly a suspect in
the incident and that information has surfaced that attempts are being made to take him abroad for further treatment.

Moreover, an officer appearing on behalf of the CID said that he was unable to obtain a statement with
regard to Duminda Silva’s condition even after entering hospital with the permission of the doctors.

The additional magistrate who took into consideration these facts ordered a report summarizing all the
witness details to be presented to court on  November 15.

Court also ordered the Criminal Investigations Department to name the suspects in the shooting on that
day.
