DIG’s Gunawardene’s son also a suspect
ASP Shani Abeysekera of the CID yesterday told the Magistrate’s Court of Colombo, that the son of DIG Vass Gunawardene, Ravindu, had to be arrested as a suspect in the abduction and killing of businessman Shyam, in Colombo recently. The CID submitted an investigation report to support their request.

Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen yesterday re-remanded DIG Vass Gunawardene till July 17, 2013.

The other six suspects are being kept in CID custody under detention orders.

Counsel Anil Seneviratne and Ajith Pathirana appeared for the DIG.

Counsel Nalinda Indatissa appeared for the aggrieved party, Shyam’s family.

The body of the businessman, with gunshot injuries, was found at Dompe on May 23. Later the victim was identified as 35-year-old, Mohammed Shiyam, of Sagara Road, Bambalapitiya.

Two service pistols, suspected to have been used in the killing, were taken into CID custody from the Peliyagoda police station.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), which initiated investigations into the disappearance of the businessman, first recovered the victim’s vehicle in the Kandewatte area of Nugegoda.
