Animals sacrificed in defiance of court order
Priests at the Kali Kovil on St. John’s Estate, Yatadolawatte, Matugama, yesterday carried out animal sacrifices in defiance of a court order.

The order forbidding animal sacrifices had been issued by Matugama Magistrate and additional District Judge Ms. Abeywickreme Weerasinghe.

No sooner had the impending animal sacrifice become public monks in the area with a large number of people surrounded the place, protesting.

Matugama police, fearing a breach of the peace, immediately brought the matters to the notice of the Magistrate and obtained orders to stop both the animal sacrifice and the protest.

UNP Kalutara District parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma, who rushed to the scene had a heated argument with the protesting monks.

The monks have lodged an entry with the Matugama police that they were threatened by Thewarapperuma.

When The Island inquired about the incident from the Matugama police, a senior officer said they would inform the Magistrate of the violation of the court order.
